HID (High Intensity Discharge) replacement bulbs
HID xenon bulb is a micro discharge bulb filled with a
mixture of noble gases including xenon gas and mercury metal helitde salt. The
bulb has no filament as a conventional halogen
bulb does, but the light arc is created between two electrodes. It was
used by the Germen car makers, BMW in the early 1990s and by mid 1990s
Mercedes Benz also installed the HIDs in some of their models. It's very
common use on most of the Luxury cars today. It also shows that this newer
lighting technology is reliable and widely acceptable by the automobile
industries.

The D4 preform bulbs are new type of HID bulbs based on the
D2 preform, the difference is they are mercury free and more environmental
friendly. The D4 bulbs are not interchangeable with the D2, they use lower
voltage and a D4 specification ballast is needed.
