The D1R and D1S are a newer generation HID bulbs, their ignitors are incorporated into the bases of the bulbs, eliminated the extra part and space. It's very common use on most of the Luxury cars today.
The D4 preform bulbs are new type of HID bulbs based on the D2 preform, the difference is they are mercury free and more environmental friendly. The D4 bulbs are not interchangeable with the D2, they use lower voltage and a D4 specification ballast is needed.
The D3S HID bulbs contain no mercury, their ignitors are incorporated into the bases of the bulbs, eliminated the extra part and space similar to the D1S. The environmental friendly D3 and the D4 are in production since 2004, Lexus and Toyota started to equip some of their models with the D4 in 2006 and Audi installed the D3 in some of their 2008 and newer models. Even though the D1 and the D3 look the same, they are not compatible, you need a D3 specification ballast to use this bulb.
